The Teen Money Manual: A Guide to Cash, Credit, Spending, Saving, Work, Wealth, and More by Kara McGuire

The Teen Money Manual: A Guide to Cash, Credit, Spending, Saving, Work, Wealth, and More

 by Kara McGuire

Wouldn’t it be great if money grew on trees? But since it doesn’t, everyone has to learn how to earn and manage money in order to live and it’s never too early to start. This book offers today’s teens the best and most up-to-date tips on how to make money, how to spend it, how to invest and save it, and how to protect it. Learn how to land that first job, figure out your paycheck, and negotiate a raise.

KUDOS to Capstone Young Readers Publishers for such a timely, well-written, and engaging book.

I am the Teen Librarian tonight at one of our Carnegie Libraries and was handed this new book to look at by the library staff.

I leafed through this and thought about the plethora of students and friends who would benefit from this great read.

I have taught students over the years the importance of making their own money through starting businesses such as landscaping, jewelry making, snow removal, hair braiding and other endeavors. I taught my students how to design advertising for their businesses using Word, PowerPoint, and Publisher also.

The text, pictures, paragraphs, subject area, and total package would hold the interest for any teen.

I enjoyed how the Table of Contents is unique and eye catching for teens. The Table of Contents is divided into EARNING, SAVING, SPENDING, AND PROTECTING!

There is a GLOSSARY, SELECT BIBLIOGRAPHY & SOURCE NOTES, INDEX, AND ADDITIONAL RESOURCES.

Under the EARNING section is: "LET'S MAKE SOME MONEY; JOBS AND CAREER  PLANNING; BEING YOUR OWN BOSS; and WAGES AND TAXES"

Under the SAVING section is:"MAKE IT A HABIT; SAVVY SAVING; TAKING IT TO THE BANK; and INVESTING BASICS"

Under SPENDING is: WHAT SHOULD I BUY; SPENDING SMART; BRILLIANT BORROWING; and PAYING FOR COLLEGE"

Under PROTECTING IS: "PROTECTING YOURSELF; THE BASIC: RISK AND INSURANCE; PROTECTING YOUR STUFF; and PROTECTING YOURSELF"

There is such a wealth of information in this book. For example, there is information on what "not to wear" to a teen job interview.

The part on Being Your Own Boss was music to my ears. I loved the "WOULDN'T IT BE  COOL IF..."

McGuire includes questions that teens should ask themselves before they go too far with being your own boss idea:
  • How do I like to spend my time?
  • How much time do I have?
  • What  are my strongest skills?
  • What  do others say I am good at?
  • Can any of this translate into a moneymaking opportunity?

I have taught students over the years the importance of making their own money through starting businesses such as landscaping, jewelry making, snow removal, hair braiding and other endeavors. Wages and Taxes was a great section also. I  thought of the many students who don't realize that they will have pay taxes on any monies they have earned.

Investing Basics... You are never to young to start... This is a great resource to get teens thinking about and engaging in investing!

Spending / budgeting... it's all important. There is even a sample budget for teens to use to get started.

Advice for college and ways to pay for college.

Insurance information is covered in this great resource also.

I would recommend this book for every teen and child entering middle school or younger. This is a great resource! Parents will find this book invaluable as they teach their children about MONEY...   MONEY... MONEY!!!!!!!!

This book should be in every home, school, and public library!

Happy Reading!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Until the next time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A children's book a day, keeps the scary monster away!
