Caroline Arnold's Animals - A Panda's World

A Panda's World
by Caroline Arnold

What a wonderful treat to the eyes! I absolutely loved this children's book and students and parents found this engaging and fun! The rich green, orange, yellow, and black and white colors initally caught my eye. Who wouldn't love a book with a huge mommy panda holding her baby panda against her chest? Pandas are so well loved all around the world and this book is no exception.

This book is up close and personal on pandas! It shows on colorful, rich, and eye-catching pages where they live, how they live, and what they eat!

The text is written in a fun and friendly font that is easy to read. The sentences are short and "to the point" also.

There is a short fact about pandas on several pages that can be used for discussion purposes also. My students and others loved this book. They asked lots of questions about pandas and wanted to tough the pages. They asked about some of the other animals that were included in this book such as the leopard, squirrel,  golden pheasant, and golden monkeys.

There is a page on "Where do pandas live?" It contains a color drawing of a map of China and Pacific Ocean. The next page contains "Panda Fun Facts" including that they are "Grass Eating Bears," "Panda Perfume," "Gifts of Friendship," "Panda Life," and "Endangered Animals."

The book ends with a "Glossary," "To Learn More," "Index," and finally "Look for all of the books in the Caroline Arnold's Animals Series!"

The pandas are larger than life in this gorgeously written and illustrated book!

This is a book to share with your students, children, and grandchildren. I think that it is a wonderful addition to any public, school, and home library. This is great book for story time especially if you have a panda bear puppet or stuffed animal so the children can see and feel. Of course, it would be ideal if students could visit a zoo and see one for themselves. However, now we can visit a virtual zoo. Something to consider as a lesson on panda bears!

Happy reading!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Until the next time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A children's book a day, keeps the scary monster away!

New York Time Graphic Books
March 28, 2010

Today's list of Graphic Novel best sellers is included today from the New York Times! Graphic novels are so VERY popular in my libraries! Children, teen, tweens, and adults are constantly checking them out and talking about how much they enjoy them! It is always exciting sharing the list New York Times list with them each week so they can decide which ones to read. It is such a wonderful experience. I just had a mother tell me yesterday that her son now loves to read thanks to the graphic novels... He looked rather sheepish until I winked at him and told him that I love reading them too!!!!!!!!!!!

Well... Here's the list.... Write me and tell me which ones you enjoy reading and why.... Who know... maybe if you persuade me, I just might tell you the names of some of my favorites..::)))))

Until the next time!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy Reading..........

A children's book and/or a graphic novel a day... will keep the scary monster away!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dinosaur Wars: Tyrannosaurus Rex vs. Velociraptor - Power Against Speed

Dinosaur Wars - Tyrannosauruas vs. Velociraptor: Power Against Speed
by Michael O'Hearn

The introduction to this book is reminiscent of the boxing matches of years gone by such as the Ali-Frazier or other heavyweights!!!!!!!!!!! What a way to get young reader's attentions by introducing the book by writing:

This is the fight that everyone has been waiting for millions of years to see. Tyrannosauraus rex has the advantage in size and pure power. But Velociraptor is quick and smart, plus he has lots of friends.

*******************************************
I enjoyed reading this book that was shipped to me from Capstone Publishers.

This eye-catching book is well written and organized. It reminded me of posters for past boxing events! The book contains a nice Table of Contents that includes:

Welcome to the Dinosaur Wars
The Combatants
     *Size
     *Speed and Agility
     *Weapons
      *Attack Style
  Get Ready to Rumble
Pain
Glossary
Read More
Internet Sites
Index
********************
The colors and pictures are bold, aggresstive, and inviting.. just like one would anticipate during a war between two members from the dinosaur kingdom!!!!!!!

The text is large and engaging!!!!!!!!! It has that "WELCOME, STEP RIGHT ON IN!!!!!!!"

As I read this entertaining book, I thought of the late sports announcer Howard Cosell who with Muhammad Ali made boxing the most exciting sport some years ago. It was as if I could hear Howard Cosell's powerful voice, yelling, In the one corner, we have Tyrannosaurus Rex  and in the opposing corner, we have Velociraptor! Who will win!!!!!! Who will remain standing? Who will deliver the knockout? Who will be the last dinosaur standing???

We witness the two dinosaurs engaged in life or death battle as we open the book to the "Welcome to Dinosaur Wars!" We read that "Dinosaurs were brutal creatures. They fought each other and ate each other. Usually it was meat-eater versus plant-eater.

I liked how the author included "Fierce Facts" at the bottom of many pages. For example, "Most dinosaur skeletons in museums are missing some bones. Scientists fill in the gaps using modesl of bones from related dinosaurs."

There are definitions included at the end of pages also such as "extinct - no longer living anywhere in the world." This is a creative way to teach vocabulary without students even realizing this!

The colors are green, red, yellow, black, white, orange and many variations!

The pictures are large and "in your face!" They are so well designed and organized and layed out that you feel like you are right there with the dinosaurs and that they might leap off of the page at any time. I could certainly see how young children might be a little frightened and would need to have a parent ready to explain that this is not real. As a matter of fact, this fight could never have occurred as the author shares with us. In the "One Last Thing... section, the author shares that, "The battle is fake. It's imaginary, like in a movie. These two dinos never met of fought each other. Nobody knows which dinosaur would have won. No one knows how it would have happened. But if you like a good dinosaur battle, this one should be a blast."

The descriptions are short and to the point. For example, "T. rex was a true heavyweight, big enough to take on any dinosaur. He was one of the largest carnivores to ever walk the earth. This monster stood 20 feet (6 meters) tall and weighted 7 tons (6.4 metric tons). T rex's head was massive. It was 4.5 feet (1.4 meters) long. T. rex could fit an entire Velociraptor inside his open mouth."

"Veliciraptor was a lap dog compared to T. rex. Velociraptor stood only 3 feet (.9 meter) tall. He measured up to 7 feed (2.1 meters) long from head to tail... Compared to T. rex, he wasn't even a featherweight.

What a blood bath... Velociraptor and his friends fight T. rex until the end... who is the victor? You will have to read the book..::)))

This book contains a nice Glossary at the end. There is a "Read More" section for readers to obain more information and the link to "Fact Hound" listed in the "Internet Sites" section.

I would recommend this book for students in third grade or older. I think this will be a great addition to any public, school, or home library. Dinosaur books are very popular with young males! This gem is no exception!

Until the next time!

Happy Reading!

A Ride on Mother's Back by Emery & Durga Bernhard

A Ride on Mother's Back: A Day of Baby Carrying Around the World
by Emery & Durga Bernhard

I knew that I was going to be in for a treat when I opened this wonderfully delightful book and a young baby was reaching upward as his mother or father was reaching down to pick him up from comfortable beautifully drawn pastel-colored bed.

The book begins with, "All around the world babies love to be held close. And parents everywhere need their hands free to work and play. Lifted and carried by someone who cares, young children ride into the day.

How do different people carry their babies?

What is it like to ride on mother's back?"

There are two colorful baby booties right underneath these lovely words.

We then move to the "Chilly dawn in the mountains of Guatemala... Newborn Rosha snuggles in the folds of the shawl tied around her mother. She rides safe and warm, close to her mother's body. Rosha nurses and sleeps, nurses and sleeps."

One of my favorite pages in the book were, "On a frozen inlet in the Canadian far north, baby Pelagie nestles inside the large hood of her mother's parka... Pelagie watches their husky puppy nosing about in the snow. The puppy bounds over and licks her face." Puppies absolutely adore young children so this was a great addition to this story!

We visit Tumani in West Africa. We often see images of children tied onto their mothers backs in Africa. "Lulled by his mother's steady gait and soft humming, Tumani has fallen asleep." The colors are so bright an cheerful that you feel that you are in West Africa along with Tumani, his family and friends!

Next we join Mai in Thailand. "Mai rests on her grandmother's back, secured with a woven cloth.
Mai is nestled close to her grandmother as she "sifts rice with a shallow basket." Mai's grandmother tells her stories of how her mother learned to sew "beautiful story cloths" by her grandmother as Mai listens on intently.

Some of the other places we visit are Amazon River where "Davis is carried against his mother's hip, held in place by a cloth sash looped around her shoulder. Our next stop is Sita's family in Kathmandu where each year they celebrate their beginning of spring at the festival of Holi. Sita rides in a sling on her father's back, holding a small bag of red powder. Looking at the picture, we feel that we are in the square with musicians and other entertainers bringing joy to the large crowd of friendly onlookers.

We are off to Papua New Guinea where "Gogomo sways in the cool net bag that hangs from his mother's head. " Lastly, "High in the Andes Mountains of South America, Juanita rides in a warm woolen shawl tied around her mother's strong shoulders."

I loved looking at the picture of all of the lambs and reading that, "Juanita's mother picks up a lamb that needs help keeping up with the herd. Juanita reaches to pet the lamb's wooly head.... Someday Juanita will herd the sheep and sing the songs she learned while riding on the rmother's back. When I looked at this picture, I thought of petting my own soft-coated dog, Figaro! This brought a HUGE smile to my face.

The book ends as it began quite beautifully... "Families carry their babies all through the day, while planting and harvesting, tending, and gathering, cooking and playing. Snuggled and cuddled, jiggled and bounced, bundled and rocked, babies discovered the world they live in.

And when evening comes and children are carried to bed in loving arms, their dreams will carry them through the night--- until a new day begins."

There are several pages at the very end of the book on "Notes About the Peoples in This Book. This contains information about the people in the book and where and how they live. The place where the child lives in written in boldface along with how to pronounce the word. This is so VERY helpful.

The "Notes About the Peoples in This Book" also contains a picture of the child being carried along with a paragraph on the child's culture. I learned a great deal about how babies are carried all around the world and their rich cultures.
I love all of the pictures especially the rich hues and the warm and friendly colors and expressions on all of the faces. How realistic and beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!! All of the pictures are so warm and cuddly. You feel that you are right there with the parent and child!!!!!!!!
This delightful children's book was music to my ears! What a lovely book! I have recommended it to lots of parents, grand parents, aunts, children, friends!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a creative concept. I would like to see this book made into a calendar. What a great representation of diversity. All parents, schools, libraries, and other places where families congregate should have this for parents and children to read! If there were more materials like this, the world would be a much happier, healthier, and educated place!
