Mama Miti by Donna Jo Napoli and illustrated by Kadir Nelson

Mama Miti by Donna Jo Napoli and illustrated by Kadir Nelson

"Wangari planted trees one by one to refresh her spirit. When the women came to her for help with their families, she told them to do the same. Soon the countryside was filled with trees. Kenya was strong once more. Wangari had changed her country, tree by tree."

This wonderfully written and illustrated book tells the story of how one woman Wangari Maathai through her love and respect for trees, changed a country... Kenya... tree by tree! Napoli's book is based on a story inspired by Wangari Matthai who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.

The book begins when a woman who has lost her job comes to Wangari asking for food.
"Wangari took the woman's hands and turned them over. She took the children's hands, one by one. "These are strong hand. Here are seedlings of the mubiru muiru tree. Plant them. Plant as many as you can. Eat the berries."

"Thayu nyumba"--- Peace my people"

"More people throughout the village came from near and far away to ask the wise Wangari to help them. In every case, she told them to plant a tree and the reasons for planting the tree! She told them to plant trees for firewood, to feed the animals, cure the animals, keep away predators, timber to build strong homes, to purify the water."

"All over the countryside the trees that had disappeared came back...

"Wangari changed a country, tree by tree. She taught her people the ancient wisdom of peace with nature. And now she is teachig the rest of the world. She is known these days as Mama Miti-the mother of trees. A green belt of peace started with one good woman offering someting we can all do: Plant a tree."

The books ends with a wise and regal looking Wangari calmly and serenely surveying the countryside knowing that even though her immediate work has been done, there is still more to do....

Thayu nyumba--Peace my people!"

Napoli and Nelson are quite an author illustrator tour-de-force. They are a winning combination of author and illustrator in this inspirational story of how one woman changed the world one tree at a time.

The colors are rich, bright, and earthy at the same time. All of the illustrations resemble kente cloth patterns that make you want to rub your fingers against the page and put on your favorite kente cloth outfit in celebration of Mother Earth.

Perhaps Wangari Maathai is a modern day Mother Nature?

I would recommend this book for all school, public, and home libraries. This is an easy calming read. I think that it would make a nice read before bed time. It almsot reads like a lullaby! I wish I had this story when I was a child. However, I am enjoying it now and more importantly, the children have enjoyed it today in my public library!

The book contains an Afterword, Kikuyu Glossary, A Note from the Author, and A Note from the Illustrator at the end.

Capstone Publisher Presents... Mystery Animal Tracks: A Photo Riddle Book by Kelly Barnhill

Mystery Animal Tracks:
A Photo Riddle Book

by Kelly Barnhill

"When an animal walks the muddy banks of a river, it leaves its footprints behind. Can you guess what animal left the tracks? Read the clues, check out the photos, and put on your detective hats! A flip of the page reveals fun facts and the photo answer."

Read on..............

This eye-catching and engaging book will hold the attention of children both young and old as they guess what animal left the footprint in the sand, mud, water, snow, etc. The author Kelly Barnhill engages the readers by asking: "Can you guess... which animal left the tracks in each picture?"

Here is an example from her book:

"Handprint bandit
See my tiny handprints
in the dirt beside the shed?
see the little footprints made
when I stole some bread?
I have 10 fingers and 10 toes.
but human I am not.
My black-ringed tail and robber's mask
make me easier to spot.

WHO AM I?

The reader studies the picture of the footprints and turns the page....

OK how many of you guessed raccoon?

When you turn the page, there is a huge picture of a raccoon along with a short description....

"Raccoons are very clever.
They use their fingers to open
garbage cans and to dig for grubs. They can even peel the husks off ears of corn!"

This book is very well written and designed! I enjoyed the riddles, descriptions, photos, colors and overall layout of the book!

What a clever read!

This is a great addition to any school, public, or home library. This would be a good introduction to animals for children of all ages and especially reluctant readers as the text is kept to a minimum, the animal photos are large, and the book is overall colorful and cheery!

Barhill includes a Glossary, Read More, Internet Sites, Index, and About the Author at the end!

Kudos to Capstone for another fine publishing job!

It's poetry month... so you know what that means...........::)))

Until the next time............

Happy Reading!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Librarian from the Black Lagoon by Mike Thaler and Jared Lee

THE LIBRARIAN FROM THE BLACK LAGOON

Story by Mike Thaler
Pictures by Jared Lee

Someone returned "The Librarian from the Black Lagoon to the library" and I had to check it out. This story is eye catching and hilarious! As a librarian, I had to see if we shared any similarities... Am I the librarian from the black lagoon?????? Hmmmmm...

The illustrations are so funny and make the book even more interesting and funny!!!!!! I was drawn to this book because of the title and the pictures!

What a creative way to begin a book, "Today our class is going to the library. We've been hearing some really scary things about the place."

We learn that "Mrs. Beamster is the lilbrarian. The kids call her "The Laminator." She is this huge scary monster lurking about just waiting to eat some unsuspecting students visiting the library.....

"They say she laminates you if you talk in the library." Hmmm, I am a librarian and reading this made me quake in my boots.......

"She has a library assistant named IGOR.... "Oh, my....he's a three-eyed dragon...." Wonder what he eats for lunch?????????

"They say you're allowed to stay in the library as long as you can hold your breath. Some kids last as long as a minute..."

What do you think happens when you run out of breath?????????????

Are you taken to the infamous "DECONTAMINATION ROOM????????"

"Next you go through the GUM DETECTOR."

"They say the shelves are electrified..." Would you to take a book off of the shelf?????????

Go ahead.... You can do it........

There are additional events that take place.... For example, "Mrs. Beamster subscribes to three magazines: The Mortician's Monthly, The Complete Pamphlet of Zip Codes, and Spots Illustrated: The Magazine for Cleaner Laundry."

After all of these adventures... The students finally enter the library and meet the real Mrs. Beamster...

Is the a monster or a friendly, loveable, knowledgeable librarian who loves students who enter her wonderful library?

You'll have to read and see for yourselves!!!!!!!

Happy reading!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Until the next time!!!!!!!!

A children's book a day, keeps the scary monster away!

A Polar Bear's World (Caroline Arnold's Animals)

A Polar Bear's World

by
Caroline Arnold
_____________________________________________________________________________

Caroline Arnold's A Polar's Bear's World is a great way to learn about polar bears!

This welcome addition to the Caroline Arnold's Animals series is a great introduction to polar bears that I would recommend to children of all ages... I even learned a great deal about this large predator myself....

The pictures or illustrations of the polar bears and other animals such as walruses, ringed seals, caribou, snow geese, and arctic foxes were nicely drawn. The text was clear, concise, and easy to read. The story was easy to follow. The colors were warm and in some cases HUGE but that lest we forget, polar bears are HUGE. There is no natural predator for them except human hunters!

Looks can indeed be deceiving because polar bears look so warm and cuddly in pictures,  film, video, and even in person but they will "eat you alive!" Not having a natural predator in the wild kingdom, they know no fear!!!!!!!!!!!!

I enjoyed learning facts about polar bears that I learned by first opening the book. I learned that polar bears live in Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Norway, and Russia.

Their natural habitats include the Artic ice sheet, coastlines, and the tundra.

They like to eat seals, walruses, and beached whales.

They can grow to be 6.6 to 10 feet.

Males weigh between 660 to 1760 pounds and females weigh between 330 to 660 pounds.

They are of the mammal animal class.

Their scientific name is Ursus maritimus.

Do you know what baby polar bears are called? Yes... CUBS!

I liked how the author placed "short facts" off to the side of the page in yellow. This is eye catching. They are short and to the point so they blend in quite nicely with the rest of the story! Here is an example: "At birth, a polar bear cub is the size of a squirrel. It weighs about 1.3 pounds or 0.6kg!

Here's another short fact: from the book:  "Polar bears are good swimmers. They can swim 60 miles (96 kilometers) without stopping."

I would recommend this book to children of all ages. If students are writing reports on polar bears or mammals this would be a great way to get started. Smaller children will enjoy the pictures and the older ones will be interested in the facts too!

I liked the resources that Caroline Arnold included at the end. These included:  A colorful map on "Where do polar bears live?" She included on the next page Polar Bear Fun Facts, a Glossary, To Learn More, More Books to Read, Internet Sites, an Index, and a Look for all of the books in Caroline Arnold's Animals series.

This seems to be a trend for most of her books in this series. I think it is a great idea and I hope that students and their parents, teachers, librarians, and others will utilize these wonderful resources at the end. You can tell that a great deal of time, energy, and research was spent gathering this information on polar bears!

Want to learn a little bit about the author Caroline Arnold?  Just check out her short bio and picture at the end of this well researched and written book on polar bears!!!!!!!

Animal lovers of all ages will enjoy this lovely book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wouldn't you agree???????????

Kudos to Caroline Arnold for another job... WELL DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Until we meet again!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy Reading!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
